Graduate Equity Progress Tool: Lifecycle Resources

The lifecycle includes the stages: pre-recruitment pipeline, application/admissions, retention, graduation and post-graduation career paths.

Pre-Recruitment Pipeline

The Graduate Equity Progress Tool begins at the pre-recruitment stage to underscore the importance of the preparatory work that needs to happen even before recruiting diverse graduate students.

Pre-Recruitment Pipeline Resources

Application & Admissions

Creating an equitable application and admissions process is a necessary part of not only attracting URM graduate students, but also ensuring that all students have the opportunity to offer their authentic selves and lived experiences as part and parcel of their scholarly ambitions.

Application & Admission Resources

Retention

Retention is the ability of a program to support their students through their academic career. This entails connecting them to campus resources, offering opportunities for leadership, and providing professionalization/support for publishing and conferences. Other important factors of retention include curriculum review process and mentorship.

Retention Resources

Graduation

Graduation occurs once all specific requirements of a master’s or doctoral program are completed. It is important to consider barriers students may face when completing degree requirements and support structures that prepare them for their careers from goal setting and offering mock interviews to securing a job in their desired field. Formalizing previously informal structures is a part of equity and inclusion, so even if these questions do not explicitly mention disproportionality, improving these systems overall will be more impactful for URM students.

Graduation Resources

Post-Graduation

Post-graduation is a period often overlooked when it comes to cultivating a relationship with former students and helping them grow into their lives after UW.
